Yesterday made five years since a shooting spree at three massage parlors (all of them brothels) in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) claimed the lived of eight people and (more positively) gave rise to the Stop Asian Hate movement.
Not surprisingly, in the aftermath some “solutions” such as more policing of or shutting down massage parlors were proposed — as if this were somehow the fault of people there, and not, I don't know, having given the shooter a gun license the very same day…
🕯️ Let's keep I mind: most victims were Asia. Most were women. Most were sex workers.
Most were all three.
It was not coincidental, no matter which version you pick.
Anyway… the day might be over, but the lives are still lost, and the effects still ripple — so, I'm bringing a few mentions.

I stumbled upon a clip of this from my friend's Instagram reel & watched the whole thing on YouTube right after. I didn't realize it was made in 2021, but the messages & discussions are still very relevant today.
It's a roundtable of famous Asian-American actors, athletes, chefs, comedians & advocates sitting down to share a dinner & discuss their experiences as an #Asian in a safe space.
I recommend watching it for the community & camaraderie (including the delicious food!) but also for the important promotion of #DiversityEquityInclusion in these times where #POC experiences & identities are being attacked by white nationalism.

We’ve seen a massive backlash against the mass movements in 2020 from #MeToo to #BLM and #StopAsianHate
But we can learn from other times in history, different cultures, and species to grow how we view our activism.
Activism is just as much about saying hi to your neighbors and having socks for your unvisited neighbor.
Watching a Japanese VTuber make a video about the recent Finnish racism controversy feels so surreal.

Oh great, a Change.org petition was created because of the Finnish government's latest racism scandal. I signed this both out of disgust towards the Rudimentary Finns Party and support for Asians living in Finland.
The man/boy that bludgeoned an 88 yr old Asian grandmother to death in Visitation Valley was convicted of murder & faces life in prison, which is not penalty enough IMO.

The article goes into depth about the incident & the a$$hole's pattern of victimizing Asian youth & seniors but it fails to mention that the attacker was BLACK & that the incidence of Black on Asian violence is all too common.
