Rocket Lab Electron among first artifacts installed in CA Science Center space gallery

The last but perhaps largest step before the California Science Center can open its new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is to populate it with artifacts.

The #Rocketdyne RS-25 or #SSME was upgraded to the RS-25D, capable of 104% of the original #thrust.
The #RS25 is being modified into the RS-25E, and expendable version for the Space Launch System.
Rocketdyne’s experience with the SSME led them to create the expendable RS-68 for the Delta IV launch vehicle, though it was not suited for SLS due to the large solid rocket boosters on the #SLS #rocket.

After #NASA retired the #Space #Shuttle in 2011, they planned to send the #Orbiters to museums. To get them ready, NASA removed the #SSME #rocket #engines and replaced them with replicas and decontaminated the parts of the Orbiter that held toxic fuel for in-space maneuvering, then be put on the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

In this #photograph, #Atlantis (closer on the left) and #Endeavour (on the right) have been brought nose-to-nose for #photographers and #journalists to tell the story of the Shuttle’s #retirement.

After #NASA’s #Space Shuttle #Endeavour after landing from its mission, STS-134.
On this flight Endeavour delivered the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 to the ISS.
This was Endeavour’s final flight, and in this image it’s being towed to an #Orbiter Processing Facility to be serviced and readied for museum display. The focus is on the Shuttle’s aft “#boattail” section with the 3 #SSME’s and 2 #AJ10-190 orbital manuring #Engines

After #NASA ended the #SpaceShuttle Program, the three #Orbiters, #Discovery, Endeavour, and #Atlantis, were all lent out to #museums for public viewing. This required the #spacecraft to be decontaminated from toxic propellants, and have their #SSME / RS-25D #rocket #engines removed for use in the #SpaceLaunchSystem and replaced by replicas.
This retrofitting required some awkward Orbiter dancing as #KSC only had 3 Orbiter Processing Facilities, and had already rented one out. So one Orbiter remained in the #VAB while another was processed.
In this #photograph, Discovery and Atlantis are changing places and meet in the middle.

This view taken from a higher level in the #VAB looks over #Atlantis’ aft, clearly showing where the 3 #SSME engines were removed, as well as silver foil over where the #OMS pods attach.
It’s also possible to see the protective braces on the #payloadbay doors.
#SpaceShuttle #Orbiter is secure in the VAB and #KSC in #Florida, waiting to move to the #AtlantisMuseum being built by the KSC Visitors Complex.
