i got a verification code on my cell from Avail. problem was, i didn't even know who avail is. i looked at the message history from the shortcode, and it was a mixture of united health care (i do have one of their plans) and one from UTA (salt lake city transit) from when i was in SLC for #SOTMUS2024 . it turns out that 22395 is a service that does SMS based 2FA stuff named Authy. problem is i still don't know why Avail sent me one. 1/

You'd have to say that "State of the Map" is @openstreetmap's franchise for annual conferences. They exist by continent/region and you may recall that I travelled to Salt Lake City last month to talk about my practice at State of the Map US.

The recording of that talk's been published on YouTube. Amazing I got through a very dense deck in 15 minutes even with all the time-filling & embarrassing "um"s.

Last month I gave a talk at the State of the Map US conference about our work migrating @stamen's famous OpenStreetMap-based map styles to a modern platform in partnership with @stadiamaps. Now you can watch the recorded video of the talk on YouTube:

Turbulent Waters: Showing the Historical Extent and Impact of Natural and Human Activities in OpenHistoricalMap

Historic (and prehistoric) changes in water levels, some due to dam building and others resulting from natural processes, have had significant influence on geography. The changes include dam construction, a ...

We all start somewhere. @mxn got his start in a Walmart parking lot. Behind every seemingly mundane element on the map, there’s a story to tell. Where will your first OpenHistoricalMap edits be?

Lowercase history: micromapping the past

History is about far more than empires, wars, and migration. The same attention to detail that makes OpenStreetMap special – that human touch – also makes OpenHistoricalMap stand out in the field of historic...

You wouldn’t know it from the name, but OpenHistoricalMap can also document the progression of natural features from long before recorded history all the way to the present day. Here’s a workshop about mapping glaciers that @jeffme recently held at State of the Map U.S. in Salt Lake City:

Even with a time slider, if we only focus on mapping stable, “permanent” features, we ignore a lot of important history. @nfgusedautoparts has a plan to start mapping events too. Learn about the next frontier of OHM data modeling and start thinking about the historical events you want to map!
