There’s not much more frustrating to me than to have an idea for a sermon but not able to find the right words to express that idea.

Today is #AshWednesday. A time to pray, fast, reflect, and repent. It’s also a time to begin Lenten disciplines. As I tell my congregation, Lenten disciplines aren’t there to make you miserable for 49 days; they’re there as a beginning, as a way to change your habits for the long term.

Okay, Father, this sermon illustration might be going a bit far.

Sermon: Is Christ Divided?

To some, Christ is a good person,
white, polite,
always falls the rules, keeps his head down and doesn't rock the boat,
is more concerned about prayers than oppression,
More about piety than poverty
More about virginity and vulgarity than about violence
more about your devotions then others' distress,
More about obedience to rules than about righteousness.

Today is #1Epiphany and the #FeastOfTheBaptism. This is one of four days we renew our #BaptismalVows. The #BaptismalCovenant has a series of questions that include questions about resisting evil, seeking and serving Christ in all persons, and striving for justice.

My sermon today ended with: “If we are to resist evil, will we stand against the rise of white nationalism and white supremacy now running rampant? If we are to seek and serve Christ in all persons, will we welcome the stranger, alien, and people of color? If we are to strive for justice, will we speak out against arrests, detainments, and killings of innocent people.”

After service, one person heading out the door said, “You need to stop preaching politics.”

Study analyzes how evangelical sermons frame and justify economic inequality in the United States

A study published in the *Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion* examines how sermons at New River Church, a large evangelical megachurch in the American Midwest, interpret biblical teachings about wealth and poverty.
