The local hospital has a low-income patient who needs to get their infant son to an appointment in Billings. Transportation being …. difficult ….. in this part of the country, I offered to take them up.
I’ll be picking them up at 6:45 am Tuesday morning for a 2-1/2 hr round trip + doctor appointment. I’m guessing (hoping) I’ll be home by 2:00.

It’s the #FifthSundayInLent today. Today we enter with the #GreatLitany and the sermon is about binding and being unbound.

I really should have something more profound, but that’s as good as it gets today.
On the plus side, I get to pray that we “beat down Satan under our feet.”

Our food pantry operations manager called me this morning and said she received a credible threat from a patron who had just been suspended for abusive behavior.

Legally there’s nothing we can do, but I called the PD to have an officer meet with us about the situation. I’d much rather do this sooner rather than after an attack.

Things I missed in seminary.

Going to put in a public appearance at the middle school at a vigil for a student who recently died by suicide.

I didn’t know the kid nor do I know the family, but I have youth group kids who knew him and, being in a small town, this is something I need to be at.

We have been using a digital hymnal ever since our organist quit on 1/1/24. For part of that time we used what was hooked to the organ, and it was a major pain in the ass. I convinced the vestry to purchase a better Digital Hymnal that I’ve used before. Won’t go into all the details, but it’s much better and has the complete Hymnal 1982 in its brain.
During this time people have complained that I choose bad, unfamiliar, and/or unsingable hymns.
We hired an organist effective 3/1. He’s playing music I’ve selected (because my list goes through Easter 4.
After service yesterday someone told him, “I just love the hymns you choose, they’re nice and easy to sing.”

For the first time since I’ve been at Saint Luke’s, the tower bell froze and I was unable to ring it for the 8:00 service. Hopefully the current sunshine will melt the ice enough for it to be rung at the second service.

I don’t think it was the cold as much as it was the wind that froze the snow to the rigging.

Had a transient come into the church today, which is unusual; it’s not like Buffalo is a high traffic town for that, but every so often.
Anyway, he was slow, no ID, $9 in pocket, and trying to get to Cheyenne. So I got home a bus ticket, sent him to the food pantry for supplies, bought him lunch, and got him a room for the night.
Here’s hoping he’s on that 7:30 bus.

There’s not much more frustrating to me than to have an idea for a sermon but not able to find the right words to express that idea.

#BarWeek started off well. I met a gal I’ve never met before and we had a great conversation about life, marriage, and the church. The invitation was made and we’ll see where it goes. But for Bar Week, it was a good night.

Things I was never taught in Seminary number 1852: How best to deal with bentonite mineral rights gifted to the church.
