Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has appointed Steve McCutcheon II to fill the #SD42 seat vacated by former Senator Gay Kernan in August.

The appointment was announced via press release by Lujan Grisham's office Saturday.

A rancher and Republican from Carlsbad, McCutheon was on the Eddy County Board of Commissioners from 2019 to 2023.

He was chosen over state Rep. Larry Scott, R-Hobbs, who also applied to finish out Kernan's term in #SD42, which includes Lea and parts of Eddy and Chaves counties.
