@gme Interesting.

I've been spending time looking at up and coming projects in the Fediverse that could become what I like to think of as a "Facebook killer", as that is the hill I have chosen to die on since FB destroyed.... so many forums and lively online spaces.

I also backed #Diaspora (still have the tshirt somewhere!) and hoped G+ would actually make good it's very early promises to Federate (sound familiar in this current time? 🤔).. but unfortunately the failure of both of those projects to reach a critical mass led to a period of some despair, which is only just starting to feel like it might lift with the massive growth of Fedi in the last year. I was much more excited to see #Rexxit and the growth of kbin & Lemmy, experimenting with following different Fedi projects from each other, how they interact well, or poorly...

This focus on being able to be safe OVER interoperability of different projects, to me, seems very short-sighted and not really in the spirit of decentralised social networking becoming a default, like email, which is still a backbone to everything online (though phone numbers are becoming almost equal, and are interoperable, they are controlled a few big players).

I want groups, but they need to be both safe and interoperable between both instances AND projects. So in this case #Firefish is currently not what I'm looking for. I want events too, and they need to work the same way, interoperable between both instances and projects.

It doesn't seem like anything is leading the pack yet to do all these things, probably because they are actually hard. But with all the progress and attention in the last year especially, I have some genuine hope we are heading towards this being reality fairly soon 😊

(note: this is my first attempt at a QB on #firefish, no idea how it looks elsewhere!)

@kissane your post was shared in a private Discord server of a hundred or so nerds who've largely known each other for decades. There's been much discussion in that group about the many issues with Fedi, though mostly from a "I don't want to run an instance for $reasons" lens, with maybe 1/3 members active on Fedi, a smaller number on Bluesky, and the rest probably still have 1 foot in Twitter and FB. There isn't a sense of community on Fedi with these people, and most of them aren't posting much, tho they interact a lot in the Discord server.

As a Fedi-proponent since Diaspora, I have a keen interest in what has happened in this space and I'm actually still hopeful. But it's only since
#Rexxit that my feelings on this have changed to be MUCH more hopeful. Let me explain.

#Rexxit brought many members of subreddits from Reddit into the Fediverse. As they were able to set up their own communities (based on their former subreddits) on Lemmy/kbin, they were able to establish their own social norms in this new space: subreddits as part of a larger whole have /always/ had a great deal of variation in social norms (quite different to Twitter). It has brought a totally different crowd into the Fediverse, and here's the important bit: they've been able to do it /on their own terms/, and with a sense of safety and comfort. It's been amazing to watch. Many people don't even really realise that they are part of the #Fediverse, as they are focused on their own community, but I follow one large and active community from my main Mastodon account, and it works really well (doesn't work properly from Firefish yet tho) and every now and then people will whinge about Mastodon and I will wave and let them know I'm following & replying to them from Mastodon 😊

I think the reaction against Mastodon that we're seeing expressed in your Bluesky investigations, while currently a common thing, will reduce as other parts of the Fediverse grow. And that makes me very, very hopeful.

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching. https://erinkissane.com/mastodon-is-easy-and-fun-except-when-it-isnt #meta

@useless_modern_god yup... I used to be very active on Reddit between 2017-2019, experimented briefly with Mastodon in 2018, but moved here pretty permanently when Space Karen bought Twitter last year. it's been fascinating watching the new waves each time he does a new idiotic thing, and the #Rexxit wave was even more exciting as it brought a different crowd and boosted the #Threadiverse, which is really good for the Fediverse ecosystem. I'm now experimenting with #firefish but am not sold yet, though the UI is very slick.
@knordstrom @mastodonusercount I read that the #Rexxit numbers were inflated due to some new instance admins being a bit clueless about signup captchas and they got a ton of fake accounts early on but then locked down and it normalised

The next big thing in Fediverse would be the full launch of git forge federation.

I already can imagine hundreds of "Hi, gitea, creating this PR from Lemmy"...

Every instance talks to each other so it doesn't matter which you choose.

i love both lemmy and kbin, with a clear preference for the latter for many reasons

while i think that it is good to keep in mind that lemmy lead dev dessalines is in fact a tankie, we should be glad that lemmy does exist at all - lemmy is bearing the brunt of the recent reddit migration to the fediverse, and kbin benefits from this situation

also i am glad that kbin mastermind ernest wants to keep kbin as compatible to lemmy as possible

in many ways, the reddit migration is of different nature compared to the twitter migration last year: users can choose between two different platforms catering to their needs, rather than overwhelmingly depending on one platform only, as in the case of mastodon

Lemmy

Never day never, but I don’t think this civil unrest on #Rexxit will ever get old. To me, at least.
