More than a decade ago, I noticed software freedom activists talking about "Restricted Boot". How it was going to restrict the use of GNU/Linux in place of OEM Windows on cheap laptops.

Especially the strategy of "dual-booting", where GNU/Linux is installed alongside the existing OS. So people can switch back and forth while they get comfortable with the new OS.

Can confirm. Working around EFI system partitions is a royal PITA.

@LovesTha @alcinnz #FreeSoftware / #FreeSW goes beyond #OpenSource / OSS, since it also cares to prevent #DigitalHandcuffs such as #DigitalRestrictionsManagement / #DRM and #RestrictedBoot. Besides, #OpenSource misses this and other points, as explained in https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html and https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-open-overlap.html . Also, most basic levels of certification don't require turning the software non-free.

@alpine_thistle @hisham_hm On the other side there is a mix of #OpenSourceInitiative / #OSI and its followers, but also some which incorrectly label things as "open". #OSI supports #DigitalHandcuffs such as #DigitalRestrictionsManagement / #DRM and #RestrictedBoot ( e.g. some #Android and modern computers have it), FSF doesn't. #OpenSource is a development method favoring lax / non-copyleft licenses and so sacrificing freedom of the software. FSF accepts #SecureBoot.
@josemurilo I agree with @aral about the fact that the author confused things. #FreeSoftware (consider only the 4 freedoms of the functional data, to simplify) == #copyleft + lax license + protection against #DigitalHandcuffs ( #DRM, #RestrictedBoot, etc) - community oriented #copyleft enforcement. #OpenSource (-1/-2 freedoms) == #FreeSoftware - protection against #DigitalHandcuffs - community oriented #copyleft enforcement.
@h3artbl33d @joeyh @tek perhaps you're grouping the bad #RestrictedBoot with the good #SecureBoot under the #UEFI label and calling this bad? Also, I must point out that I don't yet know how to use the good one, but that doesn't mean it's bad.
