#ResPublicae is going down for an OS upgrade.

We reactivated a few existing #ResPublicae accounts for current members of the European Commission (most were originally added here as former MEPs).

I like that the new Mastodon version lets me know about comments on #ResPublicae posts which got reported elsewhere. So far it seems people are only reporting innocuous posts they disagree with. A bit tedious to look at, but reassuring if indeed nothing worse is happening.
#ResPublicae is going down for some maintenance.

It's obviously an outrage that #ResPublicae is still on Mastodon v3.5.

Mastodon v4 was released in 2022 but we still don't know how to satisfy some needs of ours:

1) Disable the "explore" page which pushes potentially harmful trending posts.

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20848

2) Avoid promoting federated accounts and posts from the front page, especially in the profile directory and explore page.

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22620#issuecomment-1363670888

3) A local profile directory.

Add an option for admin to disable the explore page for non-logged-in users · Issue #20848 · mastodon/mastodon

Pitch There is an option in the admin page to disable public timeline preview for non-logged-in users, but that's not working for the /explore page, which is now the homepage of an instance. The PR...

Recently we've seen some increase in activity. Surely we won't come to regret it.

The suitably meta https://respublicae.eu/@EU_opendata/113743291989376019 is among the most popular posts of the past day.

(We also received the first report in many months, blank and not actionable.)

It is increasingly questionable to post on the other side and to crosspost here from there. At the same time, it's increasingly necessary to help people avoid visiting the former birdsite.

When to shut down #ResPublicae for good?

#ResPublicae was down for about 5 minutes as a service was killed by an OOM. Mastodon services spontaneously shut down and had to be manually restarted.

No further action is deemed necessary as we already have more memory than usually necessary. Shifting to a smaller instance would probably increase the need for manual work like this.

To reduce costs (and possibly save energy), we're experimenting with moving older files to cold storage.

For now the simplistic approach is a #Scaleway object storage lifecycle rule to move all attachments older than 180 days to the Glacier class. It's not possible for such rules to target only originals, or mp4 files, or files above a certain size.

In a few months we can consider whether to refine this approach. Feedback appreciated.

Some instances managed to survive a bit longer but now we're suspending updates of #ResPublicae accounts. We'll reassess in a little while.

@mapto Thanks for asking, here it is: @EUprosecutor.

If you want to code in Python you can help by patching PleromaBot: https://github.com/robertoszek/pleroma-bot/issues/131

At the moment I'm not planning to expand #ResPublicae but I'll have to decide what to do with new people after the Parliament elections. It will be less depressing to put resources into it if the mirrors actually work. ;)
