#RegulatoryFailureOrDrownInABathtub. Inequality- supersizing your mobile dining room kills those fated to walk:
Since the 2008 recession, SUVs and pickup trucks have overtaken sedans and station wagons as the top selling vehicles. Now almost three-in-four new cars sold is an SUV or pickup. A number studies have confirmed the relationship between larger vehicles and rising pedestrian deaths. A 2015 review of the research by NHTSA found pedestrian who were struck by SUVs were 2.5 to three times more likely to be killed. Research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examined how squarer, more “aggressive-looking” front ends — which are in fashion right now in the automobile industry — contribute to the problem.

Microplastics From Tires Are Polluting Our Waterways

Jonathan Vankin for California Local- NHTSA found that, nationwide, about 36 percent of all crashes take place at intersections. Of those, 7.8 percent—more than 60,000 crashes per year—are due to obstructed views. There are numerous ways an intersection view can be blocked, but vehicles parked too close to the corner is certainly a frequent one. Lee’s bill tries to cut down on those obstructions by banning parked vehicles within 20 feet of an intersection or a crosswalk.

California leaders are at COP28, but our state can't claim leadership on climate until we take steps to shift away from motor vehicles.
