The Sierra Club lawsuit is asking that Caltrans properly analyze project impacts as specified in SB 743 in its environmental analysis and to fully #mitigate for those #impacts (i.e GHG emissions) as required under #SB32- using the newer dynamic UCD Induced Traffic calculator and mitigating these additional #VMTs through subsidies to public transit agencies and traffic management strategies instead of the wildly optimistic and woefully underfunded assumptions.

San Francisco activists propose ride-hail tax to fund Muni

Ride-hailing services like Uber, Lyft and Waymo are facing a grassroots effort to add a second tax on San Francisco rides to support the cash-strapped Muni transit system.

The San Francisco Standard

#SUVsAreIncreasingPedestrianDeaths: American autos aren’t bigger because consumers have suddenly embraced off-roading, the construction trades, or home improvement projects. They’re bigger because automakers want to escape regulations. Each manufacturer is required to comply with boutique greenhouse gas emissions standards, which are calculated based on the size and capabilities of the cars in their fleets... As a result of the increased average footprint of cars, automakers in 2021 could emit eight more grams per mile than in 2012.

#RegulatoryFailureOrDrownInABathtub. Inequality- supersizing your mobile dining room kills those fated to walk:
Since the 2008 recession, SUVs and pickup trucks have overtaken sedans and station wagons as the top selling vehicles. Now almost three-in-four new cars sold is an SUV or pickup. A number studies have confirmed the relationship between larger vehicles and rising pedestrian deaths. A 2015 review of the research by NHTSA found pedestrian who were struck by SUVs were 2.5 to three times more likely to be killed. Research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examined how squarer, more “aggressive-looking” front ends — which are in fashion right now in the automobile industry — contribute to the problem.

My Written Testimony in Favor of Maryland's Pedestrian Fatality Prevention Act

Delegate Robbyn Lewis has proposed modestly higher registration fees for oversized SUVs and trucks proven to pose additional hazards to those on foot.

Unpopular Opinions
Jonathan Vankin for California Local- NHTSA found that, nationwide, about 36 percent of all crashes take place at intersections. Of those, 7.8 percent—more than 60,000 crashes per year—are due to obstructed views. There are numerous ways an intersection view can be blocked, but vehicles parked too close to the corner is certainly a frequent one. Lee’s bill tries to cut down on those obstructions by banning parked vehicles within 20 feet of an intersection or a crosswalk.
