wide streets beget themselves to prolonged pedestrian traverses, creating more opportunities for vehicular crashes. The road is also a one-way street; the combination of these two factors, per the pedestrian protection advocacy nonprofit, evokes a sense of reckless driving. #VisionZero’s San Francisco chapter notes just 12% of City street miles account for some 68% of all severe and fatal pedestrian injuries; the 6th and Brytan streets intersection in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, where a thirty-something man lost his life crossing the road early in the morning on February 8th, is among those City-managed roadways

San Francisco Records Second Pedestrian Death for 2024 in Less Than Two Weeks

A 32-year-old man was fatally struck in a hit-and-run crash on February 8th at 6th and Bryant streets — becoming SF’s second pedestrian death this year. As bike-friendly and walkable as San Francisco is, especially when contrasted with, say, Los Angeles, the city is latticed with extremely dangerous intersections. Vision Zero’s San Francisco chapter notes […]

Cites have billions for police overtime but nothing for red paint: “There’s a big gap in the public’s awareness of this legislation,” said Colin Heyne, a spokesman for the San Jose Department of Transportation. “We have more than 60,000 intersections in this city, so we’re not going to be able to paint the curbs red for every one of them. We need help from the state in hopefully educating drivers about this new law.”

New law prohibits parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk — marked or unmarked.

Since the 2008 recession, SUVs and pickup trucks have overtaken sedans and station wagons as the top selling vehicles. Now almost three-in-four new cars sold is an SUV or pickup. A number studies have confirmed the relationship between larger vehicles and rising pedestrian deaths. A 2015 review of the research by NHTSA found pedestrian who were struck by SUVs were 2.5 to three times more likely to be killed. Research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examined how squarer, more “aggressive-looking” front ends — which are in fashion right now in the automobile industry — contribute to the problem.

#GiveFeetAChance: Strong Towns Steinbach is hoping that council make Steinbach more bike and pedestrian friendly, as they say car-pedestrian and car-bike near-misses are common.
They want bike paths to be integrated into a network with good path-to-path and path-to-road connections.
“Today, in Steinbach, citizens who do not own or cannot operate a car are severely disadvantaged relative to citizens who can access and drive cars,” says Strong Towns Steinbach. “Car-only access is a form of inequity that discriminates against the young, the elderly, the physically challenged, and the working poor for whom cars are not an option.”

City of Steinbach asked to reduce parking requirements and prioritize bike paths

At Steinbach City Council’s SPC meeting on Tuesday evening, Strong Towns Steinbach presented to council their thoughts on ways to make Steinbach a more “sustainable, vibrant, and equitable community”. Strong Towns is an advocacy group based in Brainerd, Minnesota, hoping to make cities safe, livable, and inviting. The Strong Towns organization is based on the book

Jonathan Vankin for California Local- the Times reported “In Europe, manual transmissions are declining in popularity as a share of new light vehicles sold. But they still make up about 70 to 75 percent of cars on the road.”
Manual transmissions require that the driver keep both hands occupied, the report notes, while automatic transmissions free up a driver’s hands to do things like mess around with a phone.
What is the U.S. doing to reduce pedestrian deaths, then? Apparently, not much.

Jonathan Vankin for California Local- data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the U.S. is one of only three countries in the OECD that saw a rise in #trafficfatalities in 2020 compared to the previous three-year’s average. At five percent, in fact, the U.S. saw the biggest spike, and that trend continued in 2021 when 13 percent more pedestrians, a total of 7,388, were killed by moving vehicles in the U.S.  than in the previous year.

The American love affair with really big cars appears to play a significant role in rising pedestrian deaths. Big cars weigh more, meaning they stroke with greater force than smaller vehicles.
#Pedestrian deaths nationwide climbed by a staggering 77 percent from 2010 to 2021, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. All other traffic deaths rose by 25 percent over the same time period.

#UnGlamarousSolutions: The concept of closing streets gained major traction during the #pandemic, first out of necessity and then as a result of the success – both economic and social – of embracing more pedestrian-friendly urban thoroughfares.
There’s an overwhelming desire in the U.S. for more livable and walkable cities: A 2022 survey by the American Planning Association found that 83% of Americans support the creation of more pedestrian malls in their communities. A recent study by the Urban Land Institute adds another layer to this narrative, revealing that 70% of real estate developers believe pedestrian malls will be more important in the future than they are today.
