Das Team um Leitautor Renato Rodrigues hat mit dem Energie-Wirtschaft-#Klima-Modell #REMIND durchgerechnet, was die #EU bis 2040 schaffen muss, um zehn Jahre später #fossilfrei zu wirtschaften.

One of my pains of switching to Linux is finding a civilized #calendar app. Thunderbird is too clumsy in general, Merkuro's UI fits less info on the screen than my mobile cal, and you can't even use 24h format (as if they had an attitude problem). For a few months I was even using Nextcloud's (ugh) cal as web widget (ugh) on KDE desktop - and that was pathetic, but still the best solution I found. Even looked at Morgen, which charges 30$/mo, - because there seems to be no decent competition.

Then I just stumbled on #remind. It is a heritage piece of command-line first calendar, on active development since 80s. It also has a GUI, which looks really retro, but in fact is quite customizable and neat in its own way. It seems to do everything I want, fast, and even has its own programming language for tricky schedules and time calculations. Need: program similar to anacron.

But: as anacron is active from boot to shutdown I want it to be active only while I am logged into the window system.

No doubt I am able to write this myself. Yet before I start, I would like to be sure it does not exist.

Wow, that is an epic catalogue of possibilities! Bookmarked, thank you :-)

That said, I'm not thinking I'll put my whole calendar in - only particular reminders, like renewing library books or putting in a wash.

Here in return is my own write-up, from when I originally worked out how to make Remind do what I wanted, namely generating popups at particular times:

That was on my older desktop machine on Ubuntu. And I'll probably start by copying those files onto the laptop, although some might want tweaking now.

The reason it's a timely reminder right now is, I had Windows on my laptop till about a week ago (basically because of running Dragon) - and I don't think Remind works on Win, does it? or at least, it used not to - but I just recently took the Windows off the laptop and jumped to LMDE! So I'm in a phase of figuring out what else could be on there now :-)

New policy came down at work today requiring password rotations every 84 days, so best to put that on my #remind(1) calendar:

FWIW, I have a reminder how to trigger it over remote-desktop because control-alt-delete gets interpreted locally, the alternative control-alt-end doesn't work either (I suspect that's a Windows-RDP-client-specific key chord) and the on-screen-keyboard method didn't work either the last time I tried. But PowerShell can launch the correct dialog. Sometimes you just do what works, even if it's inelegant.

I miss the Unix ability to just type `passwd` and change passwords without folderol.
