The incredible floating reed islands of the Uru people on Lake Titicaca! 🚣‍♀️

These islands are completely man-made from totora reeds and have been home to Uru communities for over 500 years. The islands need constant maintenance as the bottom layers decompose, so fresh reeds are continuously added on top.

Their traditional reed boats are beautiful - some shaped like pumas or condors from Andean culture. Everything here comes from these versatile reeds, from homes to boats to the ground itself.
