Notice how no one complains about web previews embedded in posts, as seen here? How are they different from quoted posts? Not very. They are simply supported by standard protocol not yet available for QPs . But the net effect is precisely the same. We get to see what someone wants us to know more about, so we're more likely to explore it. That's all a QP seeks to do in the vast majority of use-cases..

#QuotedPostsOnMastodon

There is just something odd at work when people suggest that's somehow "better" to click a link with a mystery-meat destination, rather than see the item someone wants them to see or know about. And just because in 0.001% of posts, some dick might abuse that quoting tool and use it to call out, shame, or embarrass someone. And I have yet to see a single person santioned or hectored for using a QP. Even once. Because only a handful of true believers notice or care.

#QuotedPostsOnMastodon

@dchansen @marcelias But of course, I am on mastodon.social, which does not yet support QPs (it's 'being explored'). So your post simply renders the quoted item as a link, not an "inline" post, as my image-based fake QP below simulates (while also sharing your failed QP). #QuotedPostsOnMastodon

Well, I guess I can retire the #QuotedPostsOnMastodon tag, eh Chris? Let's go celebrate the win, I'm buyin!

On to search! β€” before Google adds real-time indexing on top of what it's doing already and the moral panics overwhelm us all :)

So, I finally poked around Post News. And you know what amused me instantly?

The first 9 posts (NINE in a row) were all quoted posts :)

I rest my case. They are simply an obvious sharing tool and social media will never feel right without them. The sooner they are implemented, the better, imo.

@shoq

I’m not sophisticated about any technical aspects of the Fediverse, so maybe this is a naive question. But…

…would it be feasible to set up #QuotedPostsOnMastodon so that the poster can control whether his or her post can be quoted or not?

If so, posters who fear harassment could opt out, and communities that thrive on QTs could opt in.

#QuoteTweet

@RyanJSuto But the point isn't about either of those things. It is to refer, recommend or annotate a thing so someone notices the post, idea, or alternative view of the thing in the first place? Often, posts are something no would notice or care about without a clever or overly composed "reply" that has to convey both the poster's point AND the unseen context, or the source post will never even be seen. It's a tedious, uncreative & ineffective means of sharing content.
#QuotedPostsOnMastodon

This will grate on some old-school Mastians, but the Fediverse (mostly Mastodon) is still lacking a certain sharing energy. And the blame for that is the decision to not support quoted posts. It was made years ago, based on what was then mostly an anything goes version of Twitter. Small improvements in moderation changed much of that. And moderation is supposed to be the stock-in-trade here.

Since all the discussion on #Mastodon currently is about #QuotedPostsOnMastodon #QuoteRT #QuotedRetoots #QuotedTroets #DrΓΌkos #QuotedPosts and #whitefragility I thought I'd #quotepost a toot about #civility that itself is a perfect example of perfect #civility and can guide us all.
This might be my first quote post here. I hate single quotation marks in code, and guillements are a abomination from hell, only allowed in texts which also use caligraphic tribals as chapter separators
