🎃 My #HALLOWEEN treat for you is a new #PUBLICATION 🎃

In #ComputationalCommunicationResearch, we present a semantic validation of using #WordEmbedding metrics to assess implicit group #stereotyping in text corpora: https://doi.org/10.5117/CCR2025.1.14.MULL

Last but not least, this validates our own study on "differential #racism in the #news", published in #PoliticalCommunication back in 2023: https://doi.org/10.1080/10584609.2023.2193146

We ran three #preregistered online studies using a new #approach-avoidance learning task:
➡️ Participants moved a manikin towards or away from symbols (representing members of their in-group or out-group) and earned money depending on their choices.

Would rewards shift biases?

Awake, asleep or drugged? This #PreRegistered study in flies by @naotsuchiya &co uses a data-driven approach to search for markers that can determine the individual performance of time-series features in distinguishing levels of #consciousness @PLOSBiology https://plos.io/44xzIeE
Still, the results provide important pieces of evidence for #fundraising, especially since all #experiments and #hypotheses were #preregistered and all #data and #materials are publicly available. Thanks @giladfeldman for initiating the line of replications that helps us build a firm foundation for effective interventions that promote generosity!

New study: 58% of studies #preregistered on #OSF before Nov 2017 have been conducted but not publicly shared. When asked why not, most authors cited lack of time or changing jobs "followed by null results & rejections during peer review." journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... #OpenScience #ScholComm

A new study estimates that 58% of studies #preregistered on #OSF before November 2017 have been conducted but not yet publicly shared. "Emails asking researchers why studies remained unpublished, logistical issues (e.g., lack of time, researchers changing jobs) were the most common cause, followed by null results and rejections during peer review."

New preprint from our group: https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/hwzsc_v1

A field-experiment tested whether a brief stress management intervention could improve police performance in a simulated training exercise for police students. We found self-rated stress to be associated with lower observer-rated performance. The "tactical breathing" intervention led to improved performance. The intervention was not associated with perceiving stress as lower.

Alpha oscillations shape sensory processing, but do they also modulate the perception of #pain? This #preregistered study by @ploner &co found no evidence for a causal relationship between alpha oscillations and pain perception #plosbiology https://plos.io/42r0F4u
Neurofeedback and attention modulate somatosensory alpha oscillations but not pain perception

Alpha oscillations shape sensory processing, but do they also modulate the perception of pain? This pre-registered study found no evidence for a causal relationship between alpha oscillations and pain perception.

From @balazsaczel: Don't let the value of confirmatory studies (to test #preregistered hypotheses) eclipse the need for exploratory studies (to develop the hypothesis needed for #preregistration).

Let the data talk: embrace exploratory research

Open-ended research is essential to building solid hypotheses in the social sciences — without it, even the best-planned analyses can fail.

Khairi Reed gives a very clear presentation of a #preregistered experiment showing that color bands in rainbow color maps may yield improved performance (lower JND) compared to viridis. https://osf.io/2msfd #ieeevis
