perhaps a "tagged media view" could be useful. An artist could tag their art with whatever, plop that tag into a config ( defaults to #art or #fediart or #mastoart or #pleromart or whatever ), which would then display a gallery of that artist's works.

Alternatively, a local version could also be made, similar to masto's list functionality, plop in the tags commonly used by artists to denote their works, and you can see the images your instance has spotted.
