Happy Space Science Saturday! This glowing orb of gas, officially known as NGC 7662, is a planetary nebula formed when a Sun-like star shed its outer layers near the end of its life. The intense blue colour comes from ionized oxygen glowing under ultraviolet radiation from the hot stellar core left behind.
Located ~5,600 light-years away in the constellation Andromeda, this compact nebula is a favourite target for both professional and amateur astronomers.

The very faint planetary nebula, known as Abell 7, is about 1,800 light-years from Earth. It is located just south of Orion toward the constellation Lepus, The Hare. Posing against the Milky Way stars, its simple spherical shape about 8 light-years in diameter is revealed in this deep telescopic image.

Planetary Nebula Abell 7

Very faint planetary nebula Abell 7 is about 1,800 light-years distant. It lies just south of Orion in planet Earth's skies toward the constellation Lepus, The Hare. Posing with scattered Milky Way stars, its generally simple spherical shape about 8 light-years in diameter is revealed in this deep telescopic image.

NGC 2392

My interpretation of Hubble Space Telescope data on NGC 2392. It combines UV with visible light.

This planetary nebula is about 6500 light-years away and consists of gases ejected by the O-type star in its center. When comparing this image from 2006/2007 with a previous image from 1999 (see e.g., Wikipedia), one can see slight changes in the filaments of the nebula as it expands.
