We're excited to revisit Prof. Robin Metcalfe

AIR Term: Sep 15 - Sep 21 2025

Dr. Robin Metcalfe is a professor in the Division of Natural Science at York University and has been teaching astronomy for more than two decades. She has a PhD in extragalactic astronomy and her interests include the search for life beyond Earth! Learn more about her experience at Killarney Parks with the link below!

Clouds of #water #ice thread stellar nurseries in #MilkyWay
Findings support idea water pervades galaxy’s planet-building material
Reaching hundreds of light-years, icy clouds drape two of galaxy’s active #star-forming regions, #astronomer Gary Melnick and team report. Findings paint broadest picture of #interstellar ice’s distribution, and confirm predictions water, key ingredient for life on Earth, occurs across huge areas of interstellar #space.

Clouds of water ice thread stellar nurseries in the Milky Way

NASA’s SPHEREx mapped water ice across vast regions of the galaxy, confirming that an essential molecule for life on Earth abounds in space.

Science News
Join us this Wednesday for an exciting evening of astronomy at the Allan I. Carswell Observatory! We are hosting an observatory tour where guests will have a chance to explore the inside of our incredible 1m and 60cm telescope domes.

Bonus: If the skies are clear, we’ll set up our 1m telescope for live observing!

Date: Wednesday, May 27, 2026
Time: 8:00 – 10:00 PM ET
Location: Petrie Science and Engineering Building

Tickets are free but required, get yours here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/allan-i-carswell-observatory-tour-may-27th--2026

The tour is weather dependent, so please ensure that the event is still running the day of the event by checking our socials or website at yorku.ca/science/observatory

Is Dust the Best Thing in the Universe? Part 2: The Astronomer's Headache

Dust scatters light, absorbs light, re-emits light, and ruins everything. It's why our maps of the Milky Way were wrong before 1930, and it's why one of the biggest cosmological announcement...

Meton - Virtual Mechanical Moon and #Eclipse #Calculator

This awesome tool was created by prof. em. Thomas Weibel from Basel, Switzerland. Here is the beginning of the description from the website:

"The metonic cycle is a period of 19 years corresponding to almost exactly 235 synodic lunar months or full cycles of #moon phases, named after meton of athens, a greek #mathematician and #astronomer from the 5th century bc."

I love it :-)

We've Been Wasting 99% of Our Supernova Data

Every time an astronomer points a telescope at a distant supernova, they're trying to measure how far away it is. But the light from these stellar explosions arrives tangled up with interference ...

Time for a midweek break from #astrophotography from our #constellation of the #month #Camelopardalis to show you Petrus Plancius!

Who is Petrus Plancius? Another of the multi-hyphenate astronomers of the 1600s, who we met in this week's episode!

A small object past #Pluto may have a thin #atmosphere
The possible atmosphere around #2002XV93 “suggests that small icy worlds beyond Neptune may not be as inactive or unchanging as we often assumed,” says observational #astronomer Ko Arimatsu of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Mitaka. “Until now, Pluto was the only trans-Neptunian object with a confirmed atmosphere.” He and his colleagues report the observations.

A small object past Pluto may have a thin atmosphere

A brief stellar eclipse suggests the tiny 2002 XV93 has a thin atmosphere — a first for any solar system body farther from the sun than Pluto.
