Short story about "why does my Pixel 8a keep dimming itself even with adaptive brightness off":

Googles display config for the 8a is overly conservative. Two things make it bad:

  • Default brightness is 140 nits. Barely enough indoors, useless outside.
  • Thermal throttling kicks in early and hard. The moment the SoC warms up even slightly, the display stack silently caps your brightness — completely independent of your manual slider or the adaptive toggle.

    • The sneaky one is (2). You watch a video, phone warms up a bit, screen gets dimmer. You push the slider back up. It creeps back down. Welcome to Googles factory settings.

    Fix: patched /vendor/etc/displayconfig/display_port_0.xml via a Magisk overlay — no system partition writes, fully reversible. Default 140 → 200 nits. Thermal caps (light/moderate/severe/critical) all raised. HBM untouched.

    Works on mine. 9a next to it, 8a visibly brighter. No panel damage, no battery drama — all values stay within the panels designed operating range. This was pure software conservatism.

    Ich habe vor einiger Zeit #keepass2android, #InputStick (https://www.inputstick.com/) und kp2a als Bindeglied auf meinem #Pixel7a mit #Android14 installiert. Mittlerweile hat es sich auf #Android16 aktualisiert und funktioniert immer noch. Es gelingt mir jedoch nicht eine Neuinstallation auf einem #Pixel8a vorzunehmen, dass bereits Android16 hat. Die Funktion "über andere Apps einblenden" lässt sich nicht einschalten. Gibt's Ideen ?

    I cleaned out a drawer and found screen protectors for almost a dozen #phones I or my parents owned over the years.

    And I could see the     #size progression. The oldest ones were about 5,4", and I still miss these days when my phone fit securely in my #pocket and I could use it one-handed.

    My     #pixel8a's battery is dying, and I'm trying to change over to a #fairphone4 that was my work phone. But it's a size jump and I am very unhappy with that.

    I want my     #xperiaz1 back. 🥺
