There's been a lot of moaning about the price of even small trucks, "Oh, they're ripping us off with these prices. $30k for a Maverick? I had a Ranger and it only cost $10k on the road" etc.
Here's a comparison test from 1982 for the Ranger, Chev S10 and Dodge Ram 50.
Price as tested for the Ranger was $9347, or just above $32k in today's money. For that you got a regular cab, 6ft bed, a 79hp 2.3L, a four speed manual and two wheel drive and bucket seats. Safety features included disc/drum brakes, and seatbelts.
If could just about pull to 60mph in 15 seconds and the quarter mile in 20 seconds. For that level of 'performance' it still delivered 19mpg in C&D's testing.
The current base Maverick XL is better in every possible way other than bed length, is a hybrid and gets double the mpg, and clocks in at $27k.
