Today is the 250th birthday of Henry Hunt, the Radical orator arrested in 1819 at the Manchester rally now known as Peterloo. He was tried for Conspiracy to Excite Terror and Rioting (in reality, it was the soldiers who rioted) and jailed for 30 months, but served as Preston's MP from 1830 to 1832. While in Parliament, he was ridiculed by fellow MPs for presenting a petition for women to be given the vote.

Henry "Orator" Hunt, the principal speaker at the Manchester rally now known as Peterloo, died on 13 or 15 February 1835, aged 61. After Peterloo, he was tried and jailed for sedition for two years, but he later served as MP for Preston (which had an unusually broad electorate) from 1830 to 1832, when he was unseated by collusion between the Tories and Whigs. He had protested against the Reform Act of 1832 as not going far enough.

Time for my #introduction. I am the assistant editor of the House of Commons, 1832-1945 project at the History of Parliament Trust. We are currently researching the period 1832-68. I'm interested in 19th century British parliamentary, political & electoral history, including party organisation, Parliament's buildings, electoral corruption and women's involvement in politics. #histodons #ParliamentaryHistory #19thcentury #HistoryofParliament

#introduction post!

I'm a Scottish librarian working in London; primarily what I write about here is my #wikipedia and #wikidata work.

The biggest chunk of that is the #wikidataMPs #ParliamentaryHistory project - trying to build a rich dataset of historic parliamentarians, and figure out what interesting things it can tell us.

Hello Mastodon #Introduction

I’m a heritage professional and archivist working in public services and outreach. I’m also a historian of women and Parliament in the 19th-20thC - suffrage, women MPs and more!

My first book, on women staff in Parliament c1800-1960, co-authored with Elizabeth Hallam Smith, will be published in summer 2023.

The History of Parliament

Throughout British parliamentary history, public bills have sometimes been influenced by prejudices and self-interest, including the Irish Cattle Bill. This bill prohibited the import of cheap cattle from Ireland to benefit English landowners.
