OMAR BARGHOUTI : UNITE ON BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS AND INTERNATIONAL LAW
INTERVIEW WITH THE BDS CO-FOUNDER

[🇮🇹 Versione in italiano nel seguito del post 🇮🇹]

‘There should be unity on basic human rights and international law’ despite political and ideological differences, and everyone must do their part ‘in their sphere of relative influence’ to stop the genocide and the apartheid regime in Palestine: these are the concepts etched in our conscience after we interviewed Omar Barghouti, co-founder of the #BDS (#Boycott, #Divestment and #Sanctions), a non-violent resistance movement born in 2005 in Palestine, inspired by the struggle against South African apartheid. Its goal is ending military, economic and cultural ties with institutions and companies involved in the violations of Palestinian human rights.

We interviewed him in September, in Naples, when he met Neapolitan activists who had just started a local group of the movement. In the assembly (of which you will find some excerpts in the full video) he talked about the academic boycott, dockworkers’ unions, the campaigns against #TEVA, #Airbnb and #Booking, the “purism” on the left in relation to #BancaEtica (criticized for using #HP products) and to instigators in social movements, and on the critiques of #NoOtherLand, sparked by the stance of the BDS academic branch (#PACBI) on the documentary.

OMAR BARGHOUTI: UNITEVI SU DIRITTI UMANI E DIRITTO INTERNAZIONALE

#Palestine is asking for diplomatic weapons, not like #Ukraine, and “if half of the sanctions put on #Putin would be put on Israel the thing can be solved”. Keep on fighting for Palestine, although the efforts do not meet enough results, “it is not an option”, but a duty. These are some of the messages launched by Basel Adra, co-author of the Oscar winning documentary “No Other Land”, when he came to Naples, Italy, the 16 of June 2025. In the post on our website we also mention the argument fuelled by #PACBI, the cultural and academic branch of #BDS (#Boycott #Divestment and #Sanctions) against the documentary.

Open letter to WAC calling for a boycott of Israel

Please fill out the form below to add your name to an open letter calling on the World Archaeological Congress to honour both their own history of specifically opposing apartheid, and inequality more generally, and the Palestinian-led BDS call to cut ties with Israel. The deadline for signing the letter is March 18th, just before the start of Israeli Apartheid Week 2025. Western governments are complicit in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians, including its genocide in Gaza and its underlying apartheid regime. The impunity granted by our global community during the last 77 years of Israeli war crimes and human rights violations in Palestine is what has led to these most recent atrocities, of “domicide, urbicide, scholasticide, medicide, cultural genocide and more recently, ecocide”. In short, ethnic cleansing and genocide. The only remedy is a continued ceasefire, followed by the dismantling of Israel’s siege on Gaza, its illegal military occupation of Palestinian territory, and its abhorrent system of apartheid. It is in pursuit of this that Archaeologists Against Apartheid call for the World Archaeological Congress to respect the Palestinian-led BDS movement, and their call for a complete boycott of Israel. This means barring representatives of Israel and its complicit institutions in all WAC councils, committees and meetings, until Israel accepts the rule of International Law, and respects the human rights and cultural heritage of all Palestinians. Archaeology as a discipline plays a central role in understanding the past, and cannot remain “neutral” when it comes to ending complicity in and impunity for modern apartheid and genocide by the ethno-nationalist state of Israel. Our full list of demands are that WAC: Respect the Palestinian-led BDS movement and pledge no ties with Israel or with its complicit institutions, barring official representatives of said institutions in all WAC councils, committees and meetings. Condemn Israel’s deliberate erasure of Palestinian cultural heritage and educational institutes, in Gaza and across historic Palestine, by military assault, by theft or desecration at the hands of members of both the Israeli Occupation Force and the armed illegal Israeli settlers they protect, and by illegal excavations led by representatives of Israel’s cultural heritage and educational institutes. Create a taskforce of non-complicit archaeologists to firstly, assess Israel’s targeted destruction of Palestinian cultural heritage, and secondly, provide assistance in the restoration of said cultural heritage. Do due diligence in not collaborating with, platforming, or accepting the participation of complicit individuals in all WAC councils, committees and meetings. Install a representative of the State of Palestine as part of the ‘Western Asia’ regional college, and call for Palestinian candidates to fill this position. Create a continued financial support fund for Palestinians to attend all future WAC meetings. Organise an emergency scholarship for Palestinian research students. For further explanation of these demands and the context behind them, please see the attached open letter. Please also consult ICOMOS Palestine's recent appeal to our cultural heritage organisations. As Israel becomes more explicit in the expansionist endeavours of its settler-colonial project, so too must our opposition become more explicit. Should WAC fail to do so, they are continuing to align themselves with Western governments and their complicity in Israel’s crimes, as well as continuing to fortify the same concentration of power in the Global West they originally aimed to oppose and counteract.
