Your bank might be doing more damage to the climate than flying. In 2024, banks poured $869 billion into the fossil fuel industry, a huge jump from the year before, funding the companies building pipelines and drilling for oil around the world. A major banking alliance that had committed members to move away from financing high-emission sectors fell apart last year when nearly every top fossil-fuel-funding bank pulled out.
According to a report by Project Drawdown, banking with a carbon-intensive U.S. bank means you could be indirectly lending 20 to 30 percent of your money to the industries most responsible for the climate crisis. The carbon footprint of where you keep your cash can actually outweigh the impact of flying. The good news is that switching matters. Moving just $8,000 from a high-carbon bank to a low-carbon one can cut your personal emissions by twice as much as going vegetarian.
