Kakīānau (black swan) cygnet https://birds.photos/2024/04/15/kakianau-black-swan-cygnet/ Amazing birds. I saw a flock of 50+ Black Swans flying low in a V formation over Brisbane Water, near Woy Woy, on Saturday... and it was spectacular, awe inspiring... #nature #ozwild #photography #birds

Harsh light presents challenges and opportunities. I used to prefer overcast conditions for nice even diffuse light across my subjects, but more and more I find myself hoping for bright sunshine be…

This little water dragon was hanging out in an area between shops that had a lot of greenery and a water feature (not pictured).

I'm happy to say that the Australian Ravens that make their home in the large Blackbutt Gum in our yard are doing splendidly. They've successfully raised another brood, despite incessant attacks by Common Mynahs and Noisy Miners. I find their melancholy sighs ('Waaaaah') quite poetic.

When I first came to #Australia, finding their cries so different from the guttural sounds of European corvids I was used to, I called them 'the Pathetic Crows'.

Tricksters, messengers, fire-bringers: crows and ravens have been woven into human history

Australia has five native corvid species, but their unearned reputation for cruelty and an all-too-human cleverness makes them unlikely to win a popularity contest

Brolga Cranes (*Antigone rubicunda*) near Longreach, QLD, Australia.
They're so big that when they fly close overhead it is like seeing Pterodactyls in real life. And the noise/sensation of their huge beating wings as they flap - an extraordinary sensation, created by extraordinary creatures!

A Bush Curlew (*Burhinus grallarius*) in the Atherton Tablelands, QLD. These can seem incredibly tame, since their technique to avoid potential predators is to remain motionless. They're pretty common up North and we seen (and heard) lots; but I have never seen any on the more populated SE coast. Their cries at night are extremely spooky.

Lovely little Fence Skink (Cryptoblepharus virgatus) sunning itself on an electric pole on a beautifully sunny #Easter morning here on the Central Coast of #NSW #australia

These little skinks often give an indication of the upcoming weather. They're out sunning themselves in the early morning - and it looks like it is going to be a wonderful day.

Interesting Cowboy Beetle (Chondropyga dorsalis) in the #garden today. They're regularly flying around, buzzing like minor jumbo jets and clumsily bumping into things, including me.
