Also, we launched our new journal, yay: https://transformations.episciences.org/

The theme of the first thematic issue is Workflows, so get ready to dive into the machinery of digital methods at work.
Check the intro for the overview of the content: https://transformations.episciences.org/articles/15780
This is the 1st publication batch of 2, we have more papers from this thematic issue coming up in the fall.
The 2nd call for contributions will be posted soon - the topic: "The Past". Stay tuned!

Episciences

One thing we are working on in the ATRIUM project is the assessment of non-traditional research outputs in the Humanities. I have written a blogpost to explain why, what and how: https://dariahopen.hypotheses.org/2113 #openmethods #ATRIUMproject #overlayjournals #openaccess #researchassessment cc @dariaheu
Assessing non-traditional academic formats: the hidden traps to the treasure trove

The advent of digital methods has contributed to raising awareness of hitherto neglected methodological bricks and activities adjacent to (and relevant for) the production of knowledge. Academia traditionally values research outputs published in an authoritative version like monographs and research papers. Yet, digital approaches have shown that iterative processes as well as the intermediate work steps are necessary to write the research papers in the first place.

"#HarvardLibrary is launching…the Harvard Open Journals Program (#HOJP), which will…provide publishing services, resources, and seed funding to participating Harvard researchers for new academic #journals. All journal articles will be entirely free for authors and readers…The program is a direct response to faculty interest in alternatives to the article-processing-charge [#APC] model."

Harvard Library is Launching Harvard Open Journals Program

Harvard Library will offer new sustainable and equitable open access publishing models to advance open access scholarly communication.

Very good to see yet another Diamond OA overlay journal being established - this is a very promising route for fields that are comfortable with preprints to develop their own OA journals. Interesting that they accept preprints from not just arXiv but also HAL and Zenodo.

Peter Coles @telescoper leads by example with his Open Journal of Astrophysics! Fully agree with his views and those of Olivier.

@telescoper regarding your point "What is needed is a global effort to link these repositories to each other and to peer review mechanisms"

... I hope you've seen the Notify Initiative which I think is doing just this, and with reasonable effort to be globally-inclusive and across disciplines

I am biased of course because it is Arcadia funded. But just wanted to make sure it was on your radar :)

COAR Notify Initiative

The COAR Notify Initiative is developing and accelerating community adoption of a standard, interoperable, and decentralised approach (using Linked Data Notifications) to link research outputs hosted in the distributed network of repositories with resources from external services, such as overlay-journals and open peer review services. COAR is extremely

Da parecchi anni i ricercatori si stanno ponendo il problema dei costi della comunicazione scientifica a fronte di aumenti dei costi sia per leggere che per pubblicare ormai insostenibili. Dal 2002…

9. Because the aim is to replace the current system & break the power of the publishers *all* articles need to be assessed.

There are so-called #OverlayJournals that also perform open reviews, but only review manuscripts from repositories. That is a fine end state, but will not break publisher power because funding agencies & universities forced by rankings will want to be credited for all studies.

That is also why the Grassroots assessments are quantitative, even if I like qualitative more.

The Confederation of #OpenAccess Repositories (COAR) calls for feedback on a communication protocol to connect repositories with independent peer review systems. #OverlayJournals
