A quotation from Ouida

The longest absence is less perilous to love than the terrible trials of incessant proximity.

Ouida (1839-1908) English novelist [pseud. of Maria Louise Ramé]
Friendship, ch. 11 (1878)

The song pays homage to the Filipino folklore story of the Bakunawa dragon who swallowed the moon. It was also Ruby's love letter to her first child. The official video served as her pregnancy announcement (https://tinyurl.com/3jffukc4)

@AndrewKing *Under Two Flags* sounds amazing and is straight on my reading list. It sounds as though #Ouida has some exceptionally good female characters. Cigarette sounds amazing!

I'm also very drawn to Lady Dolly in *Moths*.

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to share these great stories (and quotes!) I have some great holiday reading now. (It will do me some good to venture out of the 18th century for once!)

@AndrewKing There's a statue of #Ouida in Bury St Edmunds, my local town (I often wonder of she would have hated it).

Whenever I drive past it, I feel bad that I have never read any of her work. So thank you for these nuggets...maybe they will give me the incentive to dive in!

She was very prolific. Where should a newbie start, do you think?
