My #Technology tinkering enters the sanctuary: our cleaning person accidentally broke a glass chimney for one of the altar candles; turns out it’s a size that’s not manufactured and would need to be custom. New candlesticks are prohibitively expensive. But thank the Lord for hardware standards because I figured out that I could cannibalize parts from unused processional torches (which have glass chimneys) to make renewed altar candles! Just need some polishing. #Church #OtherDutiesAsAssigned
I didn’t realize part of my new job would be helping elderly aunts who live in AZ find a Lutheran church for their disabled nephew who lives in the Mpls suburbs to attend on Easter Sunday. #otherdutiesasassigned #lutherans #easter

We throw around terms like “team player” in the context of people doing more, being flexible, going beyond the bounds of their role.

But being part of an effective team means delegation and specialization, too. If I see a question pop up in email that I CAN answer, immediately jumping on it isn’t helping the team work at its best if there is someone else whose job is to answer that question (even moreso if there’s something else I should be doing right now).

Nobody likes the colleague who reflexively says, "That's not my job!" but nobody promotes the person who never says, "That's not my job!"

It's weird how often the person who says “XYZ is everyone’s job!” is a person whose job title includes XYZ.

Signed my annual performance evaluation this morning. The only weakness noted by my manager was "tends to spread himself too thin," which I took as a very charitable way to describe my working style of "Ignores duties he doesn't enjoy until they are literally on fire while wandering around finding more interesting work that is not his actual job."

Today’s #spiritual adventure: coaxing a wayward pigeon out of the sanctuary. #otherdutiesasassigned

So today: one of the library's accountants and I totally disassembled a large shredder, extracted the quarter that someone accidentally dropped in there, and then put the thing back together.

It still works. No need to buy a new shredder.
