Why do orchestras need conductors? Because the conductor is one of the few people in the room who can count higher than four.
The other people in the room who can count higher than four are the percussionists, and they’re too smart to be hoodwinked into a job that makes them wave their arms through an entire concert.
(Also they aren’t as addicted to the applause afterwards.)
