33° on this morning's paddle.
80° in the forecast for the weekend.

Goodbye winter, hello summer.

For #FensterFreitag here's nature's window...
Liked the way the branches/trunks formed a square frame, so snapped a pic.
Tried to create a version that was similar to the old WPA National Parks lithograph posters.

Piggybacking on my Wednesday post, by sharing the Upper Falls at Gooseberry Falls State Park in northern #Minnesota.

These are the Middle and Lower falls at Gooseberry Falls State Park in northern #Minnesota. This was in May 2017, so the river is swollen with snow-melt water. As with most #NorthWoods rivers/lakes, the Gooseberry river tends to be a nice brown color from all the tannins.
Gooseberry Falls sounds like something out of a Rocky n Bullwinkle cartoon...

First time seeing one of these in the yard!

I think we may be on to something up here.

Love is in the Air

"An unfamiliar dog can come up to me and smell 30 different dogs on my pant leg. They know what we ate for dinner and if we are sick. It should have come as no surprise to me, then, that taking three females “in heat” on my Beargrease team would be a really bad idea."

When Love is in the Air - Northern Wilds Magazine

It should have come as no surprise to me that taking three females “in heat” on my Beargrease sled dog race team would be a really bad idea.

The Pine Grosbeak (pinicola enucleator) flock (5-6 pairs) are still here. They have been here since December 20, 2025. I know they will continue to be here for a few more weeks before migrating back to the north.
There has been a lone female Redpoll (Acanthis flammea) under the feeders for the last few days.
I heard my first Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) of the season calling in the woods to the south of me.
The temperatures for the last two days were in the mid-40's (F), today the temperature is more seasonal, in the low 30's (F).

Crazy folks back home...

>at the Greenwood Creek Bird Feeders (-16F with 2 feet of new snow), I stopped by Stoney Point on Lake Superior which is 12 miles from my house. This location is often great for birding during both the northern and southern bird migrations. While I did not see any cool birds, some locals were surfing. Uff Dah! The surfers had to dodge ice flows.

Introducing Fry and Bender. They came to live with us about a year ago. Born feral, now living in the #Northwoods they're warming up to the idea of humans.
