Today in Labor History June 23, 1972: Title IX of the United States Civil Rights Act of 1964 was amended to prohibit sexual discrimination to any educational program receiving federal funds. As a result, there has been a huge increase in girls’ athletic programs in high schools and colleges and, consequently, professional women athletes. It is probably one of the reasons why the U.S. has been able to produce so many top-level women soccer players and dominate women’s soccer for the past 20+ years. In 2022, after filing a claim for equal pay, the U.S. women’s national soccer team won equal pay to the men. The World Surf League has been providing equal pay to female and male athletes for six years now. Title IX also prohibits banning transgender athletes from competing in school sports, although this has been repeatedly violated in many states, with support of the courts, and has been eviscerated by Trump with his threats to withhold federal funding.
