“The day before this image was taken, people were walking on the ice very near this area. But yet another 40+ degree day changed all of that. It was a beautiful, sunny day. And those BLUES … such pure blues! And just 2 days after this, a huge snowstorm came rushing by, once again changing the whole scene.” - Nicholas Narog

>at the Greenwood Creek Bird Feeders (-16F with 2 feet of new snow), I stopped by Stoney Point on Lake Superior which is 12 miles from my house. This location is often great for birding during both the northern and southern bird migrations. While I did not see any cool birds, some locals were surfing. Uff Dah! The surfers had to dodge ice flows.

"Rare formations draw huge crowds within hours, but volatile weather conditions force a swift shutdown as officials play it day-to-day." Not accessible since 2015! #Wisconsin #PublicRadio
The last time Lake Superior completely froze over was 30 years ago in 1996. Around that time, Lake Superior was consistently at least 75 percent frozen over. Now, 75 percent coverage is rare, only happening about once every four years

"Viewing for the Apostle Islands ice caves is over for the season Feb. 18 after a winter storm tore up much of the ice on Lake Superior.
"The ice caves were open Monday for the first time in 11 years before closure the next day because of the winter storm. Thousands made the trip to see the caves on Wisconsin’s northern shore, many driving hours and some even flying in from across the country."
