I've read Solomon Northup's "Twelve Years a Slave" and it was striking.

A free black man in the around 1840, Northup is kidnapped in Washington D.C. and sold as a slave into the south of the USA. It takes him 12 years to finally get back to his family.

Written in 1853, the book is easy to read and gives vivid impressions of the daily life and horror's that slaves on these plantations underwent.
