We had about 3 weeks with this beauty, only a 10-minute drive from my home. Such an outstanding experience, watching it hunt for voles and mice. No Bait, real Nature only.

Last year, this northern hawk owl established its winter territory at a city park along the river in the east end of Ottawa.

These northern owls are scarce but regular winter visitors to Eastern Ontario, and have appeared on each of the Ontario winter bird lists for the past fifteen years. So far, this winter is the first with no northern hawk owl reports (yet). We have two more months of the winter season, so there's still time for one to return.

For #throwbackthurdsay, a picture of a #northernhawkowl I observed hunting shortly after sunrise. Even though they are mostly non-migatory we get some that come down into northern Minnesota in the winter. It gets its name from the shape of its head (it's flatter than the heads of most owls), its long tail, its hawk-like flight pattern, and the fact that it hunts during the day.
