We know from the UK eVisa scheme how Digital ID could impact people's everyday lives.

We’ll be fighting the introduction of this already expanding scheme next year to stop a digital surveillance State.

Join the Campaign: Say No To Digital ID

What is happening? The Government is proposing that everyone in the UK should have mandatory Digital ID cards to prove their right to work. Here's why we need to push back hard on this idea: Today it's a mandatory ID card to prove you have the right to work but in the future you might have to use it to access the NHS, to rent or buy a home, or to access benefits. These schemes ALWAYS expand. Once the infrastructure is in place, it's easy to sleepwalk into surveillance state where we constantly have to prove who we are just to go about our daily lives. It will be a bureacratic nightmare.

Open Rights Group

ORG joined 12 other rights groups urging MPs to oppose mandatory Digital ID in the UK ahead of the debate on the petition against it.

Digital ID will create a digital surveillance infrastructure that can continue to creep into every corner of our lives.

Joint Briefing: ‘Do not introduce Digital ID cards’ Parliamentary Petition Debate

The 13 NGOs backing this briefing all oppose the Labour government’s plans for a mandatory digital ID, representing the vast numbers of people whose interests we represent.

UK Digital ID will be one of the biggest stories of 2026. And ORG is ready to fight 🦾

This year, we gave expert written and oral evidence to the Select Committee. We highlighted the risks that these plans pose to privacy and civil liberties.

Once a national digital ID system is in place, mission creep is inevitable.

We could be forced to use it more and more in everyday life, opening the door to unprecedented tracking of our interactions with the State.

Digital ID could lead to “the worst data breach in UK government history”.

Despite fierce opposition, the UK government is embarking on a digital surveillance infrastructure that has fundamental cybersecurity holes in its foundations.

We must say #NotoDigitalID.

The UK Government hid the live stream of the e-petition debate on Digital ID on its YouTube channel (it is an 'Unlisted' video) making it much harder for people to find. This evening is the debate on the Online Safety Act. Will they do the same to this one?
