And one of the most interesting things about the PA-RISC based HP-9000 712 series is its Color Recovery system (allowing approximated 24-bit color from an 8-bit framebuffer -- which is effective and fascinating) and also, for me, the fact that it runs NEXTSTEP.

It's my fastest NEXTSTEP machine.

, quando fazia mais sentido usar o espaço vertical, em monitores menos largos. Se as telas já fossem largas nessa época, talvez tivessem bolado diferente aquilo, pelo menos a barra de tarefas com botão de menu principal que tinha sido a maior novidade, e não estranharíamos tanto essa mudança que fazemos a conta-gotas até hoje. Pessoas que talvez tenham usado o #X / #X11 / #XFree86 / atual #Xorg

, #NextStep ou diversos desde antes, quem sabe com algum gerenciador de janelas (ex. WindowMaker) que não tivesse barras exatamente como as de Redmond embaixo e nem no topo das janelas, talvez estranhe menos. Já era diferenciado, por exemplo, o desktop #GNOME quando veio desde o início com barra principal no topo e embaixo... também faria menos sentido ainda se a tela já fosse larga.

@kickingvegas This is because #emacs was bundled in #NeXTSTEP. And Mac OS Rhapsody is based on #NeXTSTEP.

Sadly, the bundled emacs only supports TUI (like newer macOS does).

@OpenPA Yes! I just wish there had been more binaries supporting "green" hardware under NEXTSTEP. I've got a turbo slab and this Gecko, but more runs on the slab, ofc.

I started out with NEXTSTEP on an Intel 486 66 fabricated for the purpose of running the OS. That was a stacked 486, I can tell you, and with a rather interesting graphics chipset / interface, the Wingine Localbus.
