Nail polish as we know it today was inspired by the enamel used on cars. In the 1920s, makeup artist Michelle Menard adapted the enamel used for cars to create a polish for nails.

I recently discovered A-England nail polish and seriously fear it may be ruinous. Extremely on-brand colours and aesthetic for me I have to admit. This arrived this morning - Love Song for a Vampire from the new Bram Stoker collection. (Right??)
