System76 Preparing To Introduce Redesigned Thelio Hardware

Linux hardware vendor System76 has begun teasing a redesign of their Thelio chassis that is used by their modern desktops and workstations

#Linux 6.18 Will Further Complicate Non-#GPL Out-Of-Tree #FileSystems
A patch queued up for Linux 6.18 merge window removes #write_cache_pages. In turn this will cause issues for #nonGPL out-of-tree file-systems for writing dirty data from the page cache. After the #NTFS3 and #Bcachefs in-tree users of the iterator were moved off of it, for Linux 6.18 the "write_cache_pages" will be removed that is depended upon by out-of-tree, non-GPL file-systems.

Also affects #OpenZFS
Linux 6.18 Will Further Complicate Non-GPL Out-Of-Tree File-Systems

Out-of-tree file-system drivers not licensed/compatible with the GPL will have a new obstacle to deal with come time for Linux 6.18 later this year.

From the main #ntfs3 merge for #Linux 6.17[1]:

"Added:
- sanity check for file name
- mark live inode as bad and avoid any operations

Fixed:
- handling of symlinks created in windows
- creation of symlinks for relative path

Changed:
- cancel setting inode as bad after removing name fails
- revert 'replace inode_trylock with inode_lock'"

@mah It's good to have something like "Hiren’s BootCD PE" on the USB stick in the drawer.
Later maybe think about changing NTFS, if not used as win install partition, for something more "neutral" (FAT32? ExFAT?), what can be handled by more operating systems . Of course it depends on your usecase
#linux #ntfs3 #fat32 #exfat

Just had #ntfs3 corrupt a drive and ntfsfix is forcing me to use a windows system/vm to run chkdsk.

Love that this dumpster is called "fully functional" on the kernel docs yet on the mailing list it's "experimental" and it's maintainer orphaned it.

I wish I had anything nice to say about #linux drivers but I'm so bothered by the amount of trust issues I keep accumulating for this wild experience.

I don't even think it's that much better on *BSD, so frustrating.

Here's hoping NTFS3 gets stable enough to be on by default in the next LTS #Kernel, with a accompanying non-FUSE ntfsprogs.

Moving from #NTFS-3G to the newer #NTFS3 driver: 200 megabytes per second write to 1.1 gigabytes per second write.

The #NTFS3 driver for #Linux is not without its flaws. A #bug has been found that could lead to a denial-of-service attack.
