I can't believe its already been a week since we returned home from the #Taiwan trip to study high-altitude #alpine vegetation @StirlingScience. What an incredible experience I had, and I still can't get over the sheer abundance of endemic species we encountered in the mountains!

I'm exceptionally grateful to everyone who facilitated my joining the team, & to the talented researchers at #NPUST who hosted us.

Outreach as part of the job! Tree health is an even bigger issue when trees and people mix. Here Prof Jan-Chang Chen of NPUST, Taiwan is talking with primary school kids about the poorly tree at their school gate. A visual check shows it has a rotten heart, the canopy shows it’s struggling, it’s leaning and roped up ‘just in case’. It has to go and the ultrasound confirms it’s rotten across 40 percent of its stem. #NPUST #Taiwan #trees #health #climate
Fourteen years of research in Taiwan’s high mountains with some really gifted PhD and MSc students have helped us understand how high altitude ecosystems are responding to climate change. As the forests shift up in elevation and become more dense, soils are changing and alpine habitat area for Taiwans rich endemic alpine flora is reduced. Here the spectacular Taiwan fir, Abies kawakamii forest. #Taiwan #NPUST #climatechange #forest #biodiversity #carbon #microclimate @Watts_SH @StirlingScience
There’s a certain irony in the tech needing perfect conditions to get decent aerial images while the humans get to work in all weathers for the remote sensing ground-truthing. No glorious weather today, instead some of the most atrocious mountain fieldwork conditions I’ve experienced. Team back in one piece and returned to happiness with showers, soup, cocoa and snacks! #NPUST #Taiwan #mountain #biodiversity #remotesensing #climatechange #fieldwork @Watts_SH @StirlingScience
It was a pretty spectacular morning for fieldwork here in Taiwan’s high mountains. The first team was out with the drones early on to get the images needed to assess habitat variation at the landscape scale. We followed doing vegetation surveys for ground-truthing the aerial images. They definitely got the best weather! #NPUST #StirUni #climatechange #forest #biodiversity #remotesensing @Watts_SH @StirlingScience
Great to represent University of Stirling at the annual #NPUST anniversary celebration today. The display of student innovation and entrepreneurship is always so impressive!
