NASA's traditions: Astronauts' pre-launch games!

Tradition requires that the Astronauts, after wearing the spacesuits, must stop before leaving for the Launch Pad and play a simple game with the Chief of the Astronaut Office.

The core of the tradition is that the crew commander must lose the game, either by intentionally losing or by trying to win and failing.

The goal is to get rid of any bad luck the commander might carry for the mission, ensuring only good fortune for the flight.

The most famous game is the card game:
Each crew member gets a card.
The Astronaut with the card with the lowest value loses.
They can't leave for the Launch Pad until the crew's commander loses.

The games may vary from crew to crew but the commander must always lose!

NASA introduces its newest astronauts in Houston: 10 chosen from more than 8,000 applicants

For the first time, there were more women than men in an incoming astronaut class. They included a Houston-based SpaceX engineer who's already rocketed into orbit, flying on a billionaire-sponsored mission that featured the world's first private spacewalk last year.
