I haven't used #SynologyNAS for a long time, and today I decided to check the #SynologyPhotos release notes to see what new features were added during that period.

It's nothing. The last new feature was added in version 1.8.0-10070, when I was still using it. Almost a year ago, on April 16 2025.

It seems that #Synology is no longer suitable for personal use.

Synology Drive Client 4.0.2 Issues

One of my PC's stopped syncing after installing v 4.0.2 client - perhaps because it hadn't been used for several months? I left it to run and whilst it did sync some files, others were missing. Also lots of files with Red Crosses in the working directory. I then found the same red crosses on...

Update. It turns out that the National Academies of Science (#NAS) did 𝗻𝗼𝘁 acquiesce in this #censorship of #climate science. In a short statement (March 11), it said that “The manual, including the chapter on climate science, will continue to be available on the Academy’s website.”

PS: Bravo to the NAS. Although it's not part of the govt, about 85% of its funding comes from govt agencies, making it highly vulnerable to retaliatory defunding. It's the first agency I've seen with that level of vulnerability flatly reject a Trumpist demand to censor research.

EDIT. I meant to make this a threaded reply to my earlier post on the same subject, before we knew the NAS decision. But I inadvertently made it a separate post. Here's the earlier post (Feb 11, 2026).

National Academies of Sciences says no to demands it remove climate info

State attorneys general won't get climate chapter removed from a legal manual.

Shoebox is live. S3-compatible API for your local filesystem.

docker run -it -v ~/Photos:/data -p 9000:9000 ghcr.io/deepjoy/shoebox /data

Files stay where they are. Each directory becomes an S3 bucket. Works with rclone, AWS CLI, any S3 SDK. Credentials auto-generated and printed on startup.

SQLite metadata. MIT licensed. Or `cargo install shoebox`.

Couldn't get back to sleep this morning after waking up in pain, so I took some time to ease the mental pain of keeping track of what's running where in my #homelab with a new #wiki page. Have a look if you're interested in what I'm running across my main #NAS and two Raspberry Pis.

Hopefully this will serve as a reminder of what config files I really need to put in a central location.
