Been a busy year on the phone front. My current mobile set up 31st December 2025:

Only phone with Sim card is a Unihertz Jellystar. This is small, convenient and sits easily in a pocket. Unfortunately, it's Google Android so not installed many apps ... from FDroid if available otherwise Play Store. Banking apps, govt apps (driving, health) on here. Sandboxed WhatsApp (for my friends who refuse to move), some chat apps (Signal, Delta). Also mail apps (Proton, Tuta). Provides hotspot for other phones.

Main phone is a refurbished OnePlus9 running IodeOS which is a hardened #LineageOS using FDroid and Aurora Store. All my social, productive, image, media and daily apps on here. No Sim, when out and about I hotspot the Jellystar if required.

Development phone is a refurbished OnePlus6 running #PostmarketOS and #Phosh. Via Gnome Software (which includes Flathub) tried a few chat apps (Flare, Conversations etc) but Delta Chat works best for me. Tuta is fine, Proton is run as a PWA. Tandem really good for storage of all PWAs. Simplenote great. Tuba good for federated social media. Camera not really usable. Maps ok. Love being able to SSH into the phone or use a Terminal. Calls - no SIM so only use via Delta Chat which work fine.

Hopes for 2026 - continued development and improvement of PostmarketOS and Phosh leads to my eventual adoption on a full time basis. This is the exciting bit!

Are you ready to buy a mobile phone service plan from Elon Musk?

The FCC recently granted Supplemental Coverage from Space (SCS) licenses to SpaceX and T-Mobile which will usher in a major transformation in global telecommunications and mobile networks. “Direct-to-Device” (or “Direct-to-Cell”) technologies will merge terrestrial mobile and orbital networks into a singular, ubiquitous fabric, paving the way for mass-market adoption.

This is the first authorization that pairs a major national Mobile Network Operator (MNO) with an operating Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) satellite constellation, enabling satellite operators to reuse terrestrial mobile radio bands under lease from the primate MNO service provider, and as such this creates a de facto template for future MNO–satellite partnerships seeking similar rights. https://news.satnews.com/2025/12/17/fcc-grants-landmark-scs-license-to-spacex-t-mobile/
