Un giovane pugile è stato orribilmente ritrovato con il corpo smembrato nella acque del fiume Magdalena, nella zona rurale di Cabica nei pressi di Barranquilla (in Colombia) poche ore dopo aver perso il suo primo incontro da professionista. I resti di Yeiner Andres Gomez Sandoval, 28 anni, sono stati rinvenuti galleggianti nel fiume da alcuni pescatori e successivamente identificati dalla madre grazie ai suoi tatuaggi distintivi: un serpente e un cuore tatuati sul torso e sul petto del pugile. Le ricerche nella zona sono ancora in corso, perché alcune parti del corpo non sono ancora state ritrovate.
Yeiner ha perso il suo unico incontro da professionista contro Leider Galvis nel main event del torneo WBA Future Champions Colombia, svoltosi presso la palestra Cuadrilatero di Barranquilla. La sconfitta è arrivata per decisione unanime ai punti, la sua unica in sette incontri complessivi. Cinque delle sue vittorie erano state ottenute per KO. Le autorità colombiane hanno avviato un’indagine per provare a fare chiarezza riguardo le circostanze dell’omicidio e verificare un possibile collegamento con il suo ultimo incontro di pugilato. Da quanto raccolto Sandoval non ha mai parlato di minacce o altri problemi personali che avessero un collegamento con il suo assassinio.
Secondo quanto comunicato dai familiari e dal suo allenatore, Miguel Angel Guzman, dopo l’incontro il pugile aveva passato del tempo con la madre e poi anche con la figlia. “Mi hanno scritto chiedendomi se sapessi qualcosa di lui – ha spiegato il coach ai media colombiani -. Ma non sapevo cosa dire. Abbiamo continuato a cercarlo senza ritrovarlo. Poi mi hanno chiamato dicendo che avevano trovato un cadavere a Soledad e che, dai tatuaggi, sembrava essere lui”.

A young boxer was horrifically found dead with his dismembered body in the waters of the Magdalena River, in the rural area of Cabica near Barranquilla (in Colombia), just hours after losing his first professional fight. The remains of Yeiner Andres Gomez Sandoval, 28 years old, were found floating in the river by some fishermen and subsequently identified by his mother thanks to his distinctive tattoos: a snake and a heart tattooed on the boxer’s torso and chest. Search efforts in the area are still ongoing, as some parts of the body have not yet been found.
Yeiner lost his only professional fight against Leider Galvis in the main event of the WBA Future Champions Colombia tournament, held at the Cuadrilatero gym in Barranquilla. The defeat came by unanimous decision on points, his only one in seven fights overall. Five of his victories had been achieved by KO. Colombian authorities have launched an investigation to try to shed light on the circumstances of the murder and verify a possible connection with his last boxing match. Sandoval had never spoken of threats or other personal problems that might have been linked to his assassination.
According to family members and his trainer, Miguel Angel Guzman, after the fight the boxer had spent time with his mother and then also with his daughter. “They wrote to me asking me if I knew anything about him – the coach explained to Colombian media – But I didn’t know what to say. We continued to look for him without finding him. Then they called saying they had found a corpse in Soledad and that, from the tattoos, it seemed to be him.”
