“Failed Policy”: Brussels Migration Pact Faces Fierce Opposition
EU member states seek fewer 'Solidarity Pool' relocations of asylum seekers.
A ministers' meeting on Monday in Brussels will see several member states argue that the burden of the so-called "Solidarity Pool" scheme is too heavy.

Can any countries be exempted from their obligations under the EU migration pact?
One of the key questions around the Migration and Asylum Pact, adopted by the European Union in May 2024, is which countries will be able to avoid part of their obligations?
The pact includes provision for a mechanism that allows for the annual relocation of at least 30,000 migrants.
2/ The prioritised topics for the coming terms include:
• a new deportation law
• more attempts to set up deportation camps (“return hubs”) in non-EU states
• new “partnerships” with non-EU states to try to control migration
• increased police powers.
These are all in addition to implementing the harmful policies embedded in the #MigrationPact.

#EU: Council's role in “operationalising” the #MigrationPact
In a discussion paper, the Presidency outlines the involvement of Member States & Council as "crucial to preserve the positive momentum and enable the new framework to be successfully appropriated”
For migrants & asylum seekers, this "success" means:
❎ increased detention
❎ reduced safeguards
❎ increased rejections of applications
❎ increased deaths of people on the move
❎ increase in surveillance
“The effectiveness of this new legal framework hinges on its successful implementation. This will require the adoption and application of regulatory adjustments at national level, the development or enhancement of equipment and infrastructure, the implementation of new systems, processes and procedures, reinforced coordination at national and EU level, and increased operational support and financial allocation.”

"Although framed as purely technical adjustments, the reality is far more malicious. The changes to EURODAC will massively exacerbate violence against people on the move"
