He returned about five years later. John Gowen's descendents, Black and White, are now spread all across the U.S. #BlackMastodon #Melungeon #Appalachia
With modern DNA technology, the origins of the group are no longer mysterious. Virtually all #Melungeon families are descended from Sub-Saharan African and Northern European ancestors, with some families, such as mine, having an additional component of Native American. 3/3
