Seduti sul ciglio di una strada, soli, sporchi di terra e in lacrime, stringevano soltanto un’arancia, una pera e due bottigliette d’acqua. I due fratellini francesi di 4 e 5 anni sono stati trovati così martedì sera vicino a Comporta, rinomata località balneare a sud di Lisbona, dopo essere stati abbandonati in una zona di boscaglia. Ai soccorritori hanno raccontato una storia inquietante: bendati con la promessa di andare a cercare un giocattolo nascosto, si sarebbero ritrovati da soli nel bosco. “Quando abbiamo tolto le bende, la macchina di mamma non c’era più”, avrebbe detto il maggiore dei due.
Per l’abbandono dei bambini è stata arrestata a Fatima, nel centro del Portogallo, la madre dei piccoli, una donna francese di 41 anni, fermata insieme al compagno di 55 anni. Entrambi sono accusati di abbandono di minori e maltrattamenti, secondo quanto riferito dalla gendarmeria francese. Le autorità francesi e portoghesi hanno collaborato nelle ultime ore per rintracciare la donna, scomparsa dalla sua abitazione di Colmar, nell’est della Francia. A dare l’allarme era stato il padre dei bambini, separato dalla madre e titolare soltanto del diritto di visita.
A salvare i due piccoli è stato un automobilista di passaggio che li ha notati seduti a terra lungo una strada nazionale. L’uomo si è fermato immediatamente e li ha portati nel forno gestito dalla sua famiglia. “Abbiamo chiamato subito la polizia, dicendo che avevamo trovato due bambini da soli, ma nessuno li capiva perché parlavano francese”, ha raccontato la madre dell’automobilista, 76 anni. Solo grazie all’intervento di un medico che conosce il francese è stato possibile ricostruire quanto accaduto.
I bambini sono stati trovati in buone condizioni di salute, anche se uno dei due era stato punto da una zecca nella zona boschiva dove erano stati lasciati. Nel frattempo il padre dei piccoli si è presentato alla polizia denunciando la sottrazione di minori. Agli investigatori ha detto di non conoscere le ragioni della fuga dell’ex compagna, che aveva la custodia dei figli.

The two French brothers, aged 4 and 5, were found Tuesday evening near Comporta, a well-known seaside resort south of Lisbon, after being abandoned in a wooded area. To the rescuers, they told a disturbing story: blindfolded with the promise of going to look for a hidden toy, they had found themselves alone in the forest. “When we took off the blindfolds, mom’s car was gone,” the older brother had said.
For the abandonment of the children, the mother of the two, a 41-year-old French woman, was arrested in Fatima, in the center of Portugal, along with her 55-year-old partner. Both are accused of child abandonment and mistreatment, according to reports from the French gendarmerie. French and Portuguese authorities have collaborated in recent hours to track down the woman, who disappeared from her home in Colmar, in eastern France. The alarm had been raised by the children’s father, separated from the mother and holding only visitation rights.
It was a passing motorist who saved the two children, noticing them sitting on the ground along a national road. The man immediately stopped and took them to his family’s bakery. “We immediately called the police, saying we had found two children alone, but no one understood them because they spoke French,” said the mother of the motorist, 76 years old. Only thanks to the intervention of a doctor who knew French was it possible to reconstruct what had happened.
The children were found in good health, although one of them had been bitten by a tick in the wooded area where they had been left. Meanwhile, the children’s father appeared at the police station reporting the abduction of minors. He told investigators that he did not know the reasons for his ex-partner’s flight, who had custody of the children.
