George Tiemann and Company Button Trigger Spring Lancet, mid 19th century
It was claimed the spring-lancet provided greater precision in nicking a vein so blood could flow steadily from the incision. Bloodletting was basically a general removal of blood from the body according to humoral theory, and the localized draining of blood from an inflamed area. The former was meant to prevent illness, while the latter thought to treat it. #medhistory #history #histadon #quackmedicine

N.B. This is NOT an image of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831-1895), the first Black woman to earn an MD in the U.S. It is Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845-1926), the first professionally trained African American nurse in the U.S. No images of Crumpler taken during her lifetime are known to exist. Be careful because several websites and publications mistake Mahoney for Crumpler. #medhistory #historodons #blackhistory

Tinted, double-hinged spectacles, c.1790. Many opticians believed green or blue glass was easier on the eyes and would reduce glare; while clear glass was too soft and would distort images.

This extraordinary example is from the Wellcome Collection in London.
