George Tiemann and Company Button Trigger Spring Lancet, mid 19th century
It was claimed the spring-lancet provided greater precision in nicking a vein so blood could flow steadily from the incision. Bloodletting was basically a general removal of blood from the body according to humoral theory, and the localized draining of blood from an inflamed area. The former was meant to prevent illness, while the latter thought to treat it. #medhistory #history #histadon #quackmedicine

Saw a lovely portrait of Tagore in our archives. He was rejected a knighthood, writing to Lord Chelmsford:

“The enormity of the measures taken by the Government in the Punjab for quelling some local disturbances has, with a rude shock, revealed to our minds the helplessness of our position as British subjects in India. The disproportionate severity of the punishments ...are without parallel in the history of civilised governments…”

Who is this man?

I've recently been cataloguing the papers of Frank Wise, a Labour MP, ILP member, and civil servant who worked as Director of the Soviet Union's Trade Office Centrosoyuz in the 1920s.

Amongst his papers is this photograph of an unidentified man (it isn't Frank!)

Chemical Hall at Davidge Hall in Baltimore, MD, formerly known as the College of Medicine of Maryland, opened in1812 and survives as the oldest building in the Western Hemisphere continuously used for medical education.
