Well when it comes to Matrix clients:
I was rocking Nheko
https://github.com/Nheko-Reborn/nheko/
up until they stopped making an appimage😠.
I started using this SchildiChat
https://github.com/SchildiChat/schildichat-desktop
but now they have moved on to some other thing call "schildi-revenge" there is no appaimage or deb file.
So I'm stuck on old SchildiChat for my PC & it looks like they are keeping https://github.com/SchildiChat/SchildiChat-android still going.
Matrix Chat is kind of cool but needs shit-loads of work in my book.

It was a long and complicated process, but I successfully set up video and voice calling on my Matrix server! 🎉

Unfortunately, it pails in comparison to the task of convincing literally any of my friends & family to get off Discord.

For fellow admins and #selfhost crowd: Is illegal media spam in #matrix still a thing? I'm aware of changes from late 2024, but I'd like to hear your recent experiences. I'm looking to host small friends-only federated server, but I still haven't decided. 🤷

Well, finally got a Matrix server up and running so our podcast community can flee Discord. Stress testing ongoing.

It's been a bumpy ride, but at least we own the car now.

Hey lovely people, does one of you host their own Matrix server?

If so, what does your infrastructure look like?
What homeserver implementation and web client are you running?
Any resources you can recommend?

Context:
I'm looking to host a community of up to 300 people but I expect around 50 active users tops. I have no admin experience with Matrix. (VPS specs: 4 vCPUs, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage)

I was thinking about spinning up a public Matrix instance as an alternative to Discord, but I think I'm just, like, not smart enough or patient enough to deal with a Matrix server that people other than myself are using. CubHub runs on, like, 90% audacity, but Mastodon isn't actually difficult software to run because of how well documented it is. Synapse is a nightmare to deal with and it has just purely awful documentation.
