Hey #MathEducation people,
I remember some time ago reading how optimal outcomes for understanding and conceptual learning in mathematics happened when the students were in control of the pacing of the learning, but the teacher still chose and sequenced the content.
Now I need to find this research again because a bunch of parents are giving my fellow teacher grief for “Not finishing the textbook” in yr 7 mathematics!
Can anyone help me find this? (Boosts welcome)

Maths education is hard, but the people talking about it should talk to the people doing it !!
There will never be agreement, but it can and should be better than it is. Remaining in silos will not help, and neither will adversarial attitudes.

#mtbos yet another article about "developmental ed reform." https://www.future-ed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/FutureEd-Dev-Ed-Reform-Report.pdf At least, tucked in between the anecdotes about how awful dev ed is are *some* "resistant" and "noncompliant" voices, though they conveniently don't address the issues raised. She also at least suggests that we need better models. How about: Let's figure out how to teach *for understanding* the arithmetic, ratios, proportions, expressions & simple equations that are the backbone for secondary & postsecondary math. The article says we need to get past a binary "ready/not ready" view and not look for silver bullets -- that was the thinking behind "developmental education" vs "remedial. I'll help!!! Talk to adult ed!!! There are some folks who know how to do this... we're not legion but we're also not Bill Gates. Not sorry about that.
My research group has a maths education PhD position available. (Not maths, please note, but *maths education*). The position is within FERMAT, the mathematics education research group at the University of Twente.
Thousands of students across many technical programmes are taught mathematics every year at the University of Twente, by teachers based in the Applied Mathematics Department. Assessment of mathematical proficiency is an important part of this process and…
